Lympho-venous anastamosis for lymphoedema

Lymphovenous Anastomosis (LVA) is a surgical procedure used to treat lymphedema, a condition where lymph fluid accumulates in the tissues, causing swelling, typically in the arms or legs. LVA connects lymphatic vessels to nearby veins, facilitating the drainage of lymphatic fluid and reducing swelling. This procedure is typically performed when other conservative treatments such as compression garments or physical therapy have been ineffective.

The procedure involves the following steps:

  1. Pre operative investigations include: lympho scintigraphy, high resolution ultrasound imaging and perioperatively we use high resolution surgical microscopes. Nada will need you medical records especially results for any investigations of your heart, diabetes, and peripheral vessels.

  2. Preparation and Anesthesia: The patient will be assessed, and anesthesia is administered for comfort.

  3. Incision and Vessel Identification: Small incisions are made in the affected area, usually near the site of the lymphedema.

  4. Identification of Lymphatic and Venous Vessels: Using a combination of imaging techniques (e.g., lymphoscintigraphy or near-infrared fluorescence imaging), Nada will identify suitable lymphatic vessels and veins.

  5. Creation of Anastomosis: Nada will use special instruments from Japan to perform super microsurgery to create a patent connection between the sluggish lymphatic vessels to nearby veins. This allows the lymph fluid to drain directly into the venous system, bypassing the impaired lymphatic system.

  6. Wound Closure: The incisions are closed with sutures, and a sterile dressing is applied.

Recommended to treat

  • Primary lymphedema: A genetic condition where the lymphatic system is underdeveloped or impaired.

  • Secondary lymphedema: Lymphedema resulting from an injury or damage to the lymphatic system, commonly after surgery (e.g., breast cancer surgery with lymph node removal) or radiation therapy.

  • Non healing ulcers and slow to heal wounds: In some types of chronic ulcers and slow to heal wounds lympho venous anastomosis can help reduce the local inflammation in the tissue and provide optimum conditions for the wound to heal.
